The mantra Om Nahma Shivaya – ॐ नमः शिवाय can be considered as a center piece of the Vedas. Through this mantra, the God Shiva is worshipped who is perfect at rest – independent of any externality - unconditionally free.

It means:
Om Nahma Shivaya - Om, I bow down to Shiva, the auspicious one.
Shivoham - I am Shiva. The essence of my being is Shiva

The initial syllables represent
"Na" Tirodhana (veiling),
"Ma" Mala (impurity),
"Si" Shiva,
"Va" the enlightenment-giving Shakti and
"Ya" the individual soul.

Whoever lets this mantra affect him and repeats it constantly, can experience the access to the purity of the soul - can be granted eternal happiness and immortality. It leads one to the unity of the individual soul with the highest consciousness.
